When I was trained in New Games, one of the men in our group was a high school physical education teacher in his late twenties. He was in exceptional condition, the epitome of an excellent athlete. I knew intuitively that he could beat everyone there in any game we played. But as it turned out, he was the biggest loser of the week. The contempt he had for just having fun was visible in his every gesture. He didn’t “play”. He participated while always trying to maintain his athletic posture and dignity. By the start of the second day, he was gone. He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t bring himself to play. On the other hand, a visibly out of shape middle-aged woman caught on and had more fun then she had had in years. She announced that she had also had more exercise than she had in years. She was the biggest winner; she found she could have fun.
